At the end of January 2026, a new catenary installation vehicle (OMF) was officially handed over to Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH & Co. KG during an on-site appointment in Magdeburg. Following successful TAB approval, the special vehicle now strengthens the fleet of the power supply department and is already scheduled for use in the network.
Tailor-made solution for railway energy supply
The Power Supply division at MVB is responsible for the planning, operation and maintenance of the entire railway energy supply – a key role in ensuring reliable tram operations in Magdeburg. With the new overhead line installation vehicle, MVB is relying on modern technology as a replacement purchase, thereby strengthening its operational capability for both planned work and short-term disruptions.
Technology that impresses
The vehicle, built by ZWEIWEG International GmbH, is based on a Mercedes-Benz Arocs 5 1843 (4x2). The conversion to Swiss width and the continuous workshop body were customer requirements and were implemented accordingly.
The equipment includes:
- Hydrostatic rail drive system
with closed frame and two driven and braked rail axles, track width 1435 mm, controlled via the truck's accelerator and brake pedals - Large cab with standing height (approx. 1.90 m) and a total of four seats with three-point seat belts
- Direct passage from the cab to the workshop body and from the workshop body to the aerial work platform
- Insulated telescopic aerial work platform type 3T-S with a working height of up to 11 m
Particularly noteworthy: The aerial work platform is tested in accordance with DIN VDE 0682-742 and approved for live working – even in the rain.
Greater safety, greater reach, faster response
With the new overhead line installation vehicle, MVB benefits from:
- greater work safety for personnel
- greater working range
- mproved vehicle availability
- faster response times in the event of disruptions, e.g. after storms or overhead line breaks
As part of the ZAGRO Group, ZWEIWEG is delighted to have once again contributed its many years of experience in the construction of road-rail work vehicles to a tailor-made project for urban local transport.
