Flexible on the road, precise on the tracks
Urban rail networks present a complex challenge: tracks run alongside roads, cross intersections and extend into hard-to-reach outer areas. For cleaning vehicles, this often means compromises or the need for two separate machines. HEAG mobilo GmbH Darmstadt now has a more efficient solution.
As the second cleaning unit supplied by ZWEIWEG International GmbH, a highly flexible roadrail groove cleaning vehicle was recently delivered to mobilo. The previous vehicle, which had been in service for approximately 25 years, is not only being technically replaced but also significantly enhanced in terms of operational range. The machine is currently undergoing a one-month testing phase, which will conclude with official approval by the Technical Supervisory Authority (TAB).
80% road, 20% rail: maximum network coverage
The vehicle’s particular strength lies in its dual-mode design: it is used on the road with rubber tyres for around 80% of the time to keep track areas at stops and the surrounding areas of the overhead lines clean. When more remote sections of the network—such as crossings or intersections—need to be accessed, the vehicle switches to rail mode and handles these sections without detours or personnel changes.This flexibility significantly improves cleaning efficiency and closes gaps within HEAG mobilo’s network.
Technical performance based on Mercedes-Benz Arocs
The vehicle is built on a robust Mercedes-Benz Arocs 5 (Daimler Truck AG) and combines conventional road operation with professional rail cleaning technology. Its core component is a suction system that operates efficiently both on road and rail, complemented by a specially developed suction sled by ZWEIWEG for cleaning grooved surfaces.

Forward-looking fleet expansion
With this new machine, HEAG mobilo is investing in a well-planned cleaning strategy. Another ZWEIWEG vehicle for switch cleaning has already been ordered. Together, both machines will form a coordinated and high-performance cleaning system for the entire HEAG mobilo network.
