When timber rolls into the mill and finished bales of paper leave, full shunting power is required. The industrial railway at Norske Skog Bruck GmbH is a vital operational artery for the paper mill. Now it has a real highlight on the tracks: GMEINDER LOKOMOTIVEN has delivered a new DE75 Bo’Bo’ hybrid locomotive to the Austrian site.
Why hybrid? Clear benefits for energy, costs and planning reliability
The deliberate move towards a hybrid solution is not a technical gimmick, but a well-founded response to current challenges in industrial rail transport:
- Increased energy efficiency:
By coupling a diesel engine with a lithium-ion battery pack, braking and idling phases are specifically utilised for energy recovery. The four independently controlled traction motors ensure optimal traction utilisation and optimise energy-intensive driving behaviour. The result: significantly reduced consumption while maintaining the same shunting performance.
- Reduced operating costs:
The hybrid drive not only reduces diesel consumption but also wear on brakes, wheel tyres and engine oil. Thanks to the symmetrical system with two independent drivetrains, downtime is significantly less frequent – and maintenance intervals can be planned more precisely. For operations, this means predictable costs with high availability.
- Long-term planning reliability:
The DE75 Bo’Bo’ is designed for a total weight of 80 tonnes and a starting tractive force of 260 kN, making it suitable for heavily utilized shunting operations over decades. The fully symmetrical design with two completely independent subsystems ensures maximum mechanical and electrical robustness.
Technical performance for industrial heavy-duty tasks
The DE75 Bo’Bo’ is designed for maximum efficiency and reliability in shunting operations.
- Drive power at the wheel: 600 kW
- Starting tractive effort: 260 kN
- Total weight: 80 t (axle load 20 t)
- Max. operating speed: 100 km/h
- Operating supplies: 1900 l diesel, 500 kg sand
Seamless integration into the network & service from a single source
The locomotive is fully integrated into the network of ÖBB Infrastruktur AG and reliably handles daily shunting operations between the plant and the freight station at Bruck an der Mur. Support and commissioning were the responsibility of Sales Manager René Treiber and Service Manager Alexander Gebhardt from GMEINDER LOKOMOTIVEN.
It also stands out visually: the locomotive has been painted in a striking, industrial-grade green—a real eye-catcher on the tracks.
With the DE75 Bo’Bo’, GMEINDER LOKOMOTIVEN is not merely following a technology trend, but redefining industrial standards through robust construction and genuine hybrid efficiency.
Thank you to Norske Skog for their trust. We stand ready to provide further sustainable solutions for industrial connectivity.
