Sand is ever-present in Egyptian maintenance depots. It gets into bearings, roughens surfaces and pushes even modern drive technology to its limits. This is precisely where our strength lies: for the Siemens passenger transport maintenance depot, we have supplied four ZAGRO E-MAXI XL VARIO vehicles, which reliably support internal shunting operations even under these harsh conditions.
Robust technology meets a harsh environment
The requirement was clear: internal transport and shunting operations must run reliably even under extreme conditions. Our solution was a bespoke configuration for four vehicles:
- 2x ZAGRO E-MAXI XL VARIO with weather protection
This model features a sturdy roof and windows on both sides to protect against direct sunlight and provide better visibility in the dusty working environment.
- 2x ZAGRO E-MAXI XL VARIO with cab & wagon braking system
The fully enclosed cab offers optimum protection against sand and fine dust ingress. The wagon braking system enables safe shunting of trains and wagons.
The electric drive system impresses with its zero emissions, low maintenance requirements and durability – crucial factors in a highly dusty environment.
Ongoing service & knowledge transfer
The initial commissioning and training on the equipment took place some time ago. In June 2026, a ZAGRO team was back on site to support ongoing operations. During the visit, targeted driving training sessions were held, best operating practices were discussed, and live tests were carried out with the Siemens railcars under real-world depot conditions. This ongoing support ensures that the vehicles realise their full potential and that long-term operational availability is guaranteed.
International deployment
For ZAGRO, the Siemens project impressively demonstrates how standardised platform solutions can function reliably worldwide in a wide variety of infrastructure environments through targeted adaptations.
