Two track gauges – one shunting vehicle: Unimog U 423 used for construction work at West Gate Tunnel in Melbourne

From Grombach village to Melbourne: The new ZAGRO road rail vehicle Unimog U423 has made a long voyage. It is equipped with radio remote control for rail operation, crew cabin and removable wagon brake system for 600 tons/40 axles trailer load and has been supplied to John Holland Australia. John Holland provides service and engineering solutions for infrastructure projects, including land development and the construction of rail systems, tunnels and buildings.

Within the framework of joint venture with John Holland, the multi-billion dollar project for the West Gate Tunnel Melbourne in the Australian federal state of Victoria shall be executed by the end of 2022. This large-scale project places enormous demands on the technology and special vehicles. Therefore, the high capacity Unimog U423 with ZAGRO road rail equipment was upgraded with interchangeable rail guidance axles for operation on two different track gauges (1435 mm and 1600 mm). At the time being, the vehicle is in daily use on railway tracks of 1600 mm gauge for the transportation of construction material.
